Bicol tourism industry boosted, regional director says

Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Herbie Aguas highlighted the development of the tourism sector in the Bicol region during the 7th Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas press conference held at the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bicol on July 9.

One of the flagship initiatives discussed was the Philippine Experience (Culture, Heritage, and Arts Caravans), which packages the region’s rich culture, cuisine, and top destinations. Aguas emphasized the program’s success in enhancing visitor experiences in Sorsogon and Albay, with plans to extend this success to Camarines Sur.

The upcoming groundbreaking of 22 tourist rest areas is set to bolster tourism infrastructure across the region. These facilities aim to enhance the convenience and comfort of tourists, promoting longer stays and repeat visits.

Bicol’s local government units (LGUs) have also been active participants in the Tourism Champion Challenge, a recognition program of the DOT. In 2023, Bulusan in Sorsogon emerged as one of the champions, showcasing Bicol’s potential to excel in tourism initiatives.

Aguas outlined the department’s commitment to diversifying Bicol’s tourism portfolio through multidimensional tourism. The “Siram Bicol” initiative, which has already launched in Albay and is set to expand to Sorsogon, is a prime example. This program aims to promote various tourism segments, including dive tourism, golf tourism, culinary tourism, and more.

Bicol’s dive tourism has shown immense potential, with revenue from dive tourism in the Philippines reaching ₱73 billion. Bicol aims to capture even a small percentage of this market, which would significantly benefit the region. Notable dive spots include Masbate, San Bernardino, Tiwi, Bacacay, and Caramoan.

Golf tourism is also on the horizon, with a major golf course planned in Cataingan, Masbate, spearheaded by Governor Tony Kho. This development is expected to attract both local and international golf enthusiasts, adding another dimension to Bicol’s tourism offerings.

In 2023, the Philippines garnered several prestigious awards, including the titles of World’s Leading Dive Destination and World’s Leading Beach Destination. These accolades highlight the country’s rich natural beauty and tourism potential. In Bicol, Mayon Volcano and various caves continue to be major attractions, alongside emerging destinations like Caramoan.

Bicol has also excelled in training tourism frontliners, with 7,237 individuals trained in the Filipino brand of service excellence. This achievement underscores the region’s dedication to providing top-notch service to visitors.

Aguas discussed the ongoing efforts to address challenges such as unaccredited beach resorts and the need for better internet connectivity in remote tourist areas. The department is partnering with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to enhance connectivity, aiming to cover all areas before the end of the current term.

“Isa sa mga pinupush ‘yan at dillema ng tourist destinations ay ang mga walang (internet) connection. May partnership po ang DOT at DICT; may mga ilan-ilan na po ang ongoing na nilalagyan. Magastos po lalo na sa malayo-layo. Sana po bago matapos ang ating termino ay makabitan po lahat ng mga walang connection,” Aguas said.

Bicol’s national budget for tourism remains a concern, highlighting the need for increased funding to support the region’s extensive tourism initiatives. Despite budget constraints, the region continues to make strides in tourism development through efficient resource allocation and strategic planning.

“Isa po ‘yan sa mithiin ng aming butihing kalihim ng aming departamento para madagdagan talaga. Kanina po, pinakita ko kung gaano kaliit ang budget at gaano po kami nagtitipid at pinagkakasya sa anim na probinsya na one of the biggest regions in the country is the Bicol region,” Aguas said.

Given Bicol’s vulnerability to natural disasters, the DOT is strengthening its partnership with LGUs to enhance disaster risk reduction and management. Training programs for tourism stakeholders are being conducted to ensure preparedness and resilience in the face of calamities.

Future projects include the Central Philippine Tourism Expo, the Sinarapan Festival, and various regional travel fairs and summits. These events are designed to showcase Bicol’s unique offerings and attract more visitors to the region.

“İsa po ang a-attend-an namin sa Palawan ay yung Central Philippine Tourism Expo, we will showcase again the beauty of the Bicol region. The Philippine Travel Mart in September, I-s-showcase din po natin ang ating tourism products,” Aguas emphasized. I Jeric Quidoles
