On Friday, March 22, the Department of Health Bicol (DOH Bicol) issued an advisory warning the public of the extreme heat Bicol region is to face during this year’s Holy Week period.
Based on the latest heat index projections from the Philippines Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), various hotspots across the region are faced with high heat levels, currently under the classification of extreme caution.
Said hotspots include Daet, Camarines Norte; Legazpi City, Albay; Virac, Catanduanes; Masbate City, Masbate; Juban, Sorsogon; and Pili, Camarines Sur, where temperatures are forecasted to soar between 34°C and 39°C.
Taking that into account, health authorities urge the public to prioritize their well-being during this Lenten season.
Furthermore, in order to mitigate health risks associated with the heat, DOH Bicol advises the public to adhere to preventive measures that include limiting outdoor activities, staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol, wearing appropriate clothing, and ensuring the safety of senior citizens and individuals with underlying health conditions.
Moreover, in response to a potential influx of tourists during the aforementioned period, DOH Bicol also emphasized the importance of road safety, reminding motorists to observe safe driving practices, such as wearing seatbelts, using helmets, and avoiding distractions.
Additionally, precautions against drowning, especially for children, are also pointed out.
As for those planning to participate in religious-inclined activities, DOH Bicol recommends consulting a healthcare professional before fasting or engaging in strenuous penance.
Lastly, heightened vigilance against other common ailments during the dry season, such as sore eyes, coughs, colds, skin diseases, and rabies, is strongly advised to ensure a healthy and safe Holy Week observance for all. | Kian Kirby F. Florano
