Top 2 FTLE Passer Dedicates Success to Late Father, His First Fisheries Mentor

Jan Reil Bernales, a 25-year-old alumnus of Sorsogon State University-Magallanes Campus, emerged as the second top passer in the October 2024 Fisheries Technologist Licensure Exam (FTLE).

With a remarkable score of 91.25%, Bernales not only achieved academic excellence but also paid tribute to his late father, who was his first teacher in the field of fisheries.

Growing up in Bulan, Sorsogon, as the son of a fisherman, Bernales was deeply influenced by his father during their fishing trips. His father’s teachings ignited his passion for fisheries, leading him to pursue it as a profession.

When asked about his feelings on ranking second in the FTLE, Bernales expressed disbelief and immense joy.

“Hindi pa rin po ako makapaniwala that I made it to the Top 10 and at the same time, sobrang saya kasi finally nagbunga ang mga efforts and sacrifices ko sa pagre-review nang maigi for a couple of months and unexpected pa na nasa rank 2,” he shared.

The road to success was not easy for Bernales. He dedicated nearly seven months to rigorous study, attending weekly online sessions and tackling numerous review materials.

Despite facing challenges like self-doubt and overthinking, Bernales persevered with the help of the online mentoring program, his former instructors, and his faith.

Reflecting on who inspired him, Bernales dedicated his success to his family, especially his late father.

“For how many years po na nakasama ko po siya sa pangingisda, he taught me a lot about fishing, like how to catch fish and using different fishing gears… I consider my father as my first and best ever mentor in fisheries po,” he said, highlighting the profound impact his father had on his career choice.

Bernales also emphasized the crucial role of Fisheries Professionals in the Philippines.

“Considering na archipelagic country tayo, Fisheries Professionals play a vital role in sustainably managing our fisheries and aquatic resources,” he noted.

Their work ranges from research for aquaculture development to climate change mitigation and the protection of aquatic species, all contributing to national food security and economic growth.

For future FTLE takers and current students, Bernales offered heartfelt advice:

“Study not just with your mind, but with your heart. Have discipline, and pray always,” he said. | Jeric Lopez
