‘Dayaw sa Bilog na Bulan’: Balud Theatre Co.’s second musical reimagined hometown’s origin through Bacunawa mythology

Nestled in the southern coastal tip of Bicol is Bulan, a pueblo brimming with history, folklore, and an effervescent community spirit. In this quaint town, a tight-knit ensemble of passionate performers from Balud Theatre Co. is preparing to stage their comeback with Janjan Mohametano’s mystical masterpiece, “Dayaw sa Bilog na Bulan.”

This latest theatrical gem reimagines Bulan, Sorsogon’s origin, as the story unfolds with the enchanting Bacunawa mythology as the mesmerizing backdrop. A legend whispered through generations and danced upon the moonlit shores of Bulan, this visually stunning play will be performed in the lyrical cadence of the Waray-Sorsoganon vernacular to empower local storytelling and weave Sorsogon’s identity once more.

Vincent’s Odyssey

This play unfurls the journey of Vincent, a teenager driven by an insatiable curiosity about his hometown. Little does he know, his quest will lead him down a magical path where the shadows of the past converge with the present under the celestial gaze of the moon. He stumbles upon an oracular community who were also guardians of an ancient faith that reveres the moon as its celestial deity.

Entranced by their customs and rituals, Vincent immerses himself in their world, discovering the rich tapestry of Waray-Sorsogon culture slowly echoing in the wind. Yet, amidst the revelry and reverence, whispers of foreboding echo through the village, casting a pall of unease over its inhabitants. The elders speak of an impending catastrophe, a prophecy etched in the annals of time: the resurgence of the Bakunawa, a celestial serpent in Bicol mythology said to herald doom and destruction.

From Rehearsal Room to Center Stage

Behind the curtain, the journey to make “Dayaw sa Bilog na Bulan” took 5 months in order to bring it to life and has been one of collaboration and dedication.

According to Drew Espenocilla, the director and choreographer of Dayaw sa Bilog na Bulan, staging a musical play is already challenging, and for a startup theater group like them, the challenges are even greater. Having performers with minimal theater experience and needing extra effort to prepare them for performances, like any fictional theater play, the need for materials is also quite demanding.

“Imagine, we had to find a way to make dragons appear on stage,” says Direk Drew.

Like many art groups, Direk Drew also added that it is also difficult to secure funding due to a lack of immediate recognition of its value, especially since theater is still budding in their hometown.

Well-researched production

Through the playwright’s unwavering commitment to research, the production becomes not just a spectacle but a record for the historical accuracy of Bulan’s heritage, which resonates close to Bulaneños.

“I think what really makes this stand out is the amount of research that our playwright [Janjan] put into his material. Nagpunta pa yun sa bara-barangay para lang makakuha ng enough na information for his text. And then, he masterfully weaved all of these together, incorporating the Baconawa legend into our own local legends, kaya it’s distinctly Bulaneño talaga,” Direk Drew said.

Every fold and every stitch in the costumes of “Dayaw sa Bilog ng Buwan” also tells a story of its own. Costume designer Chase Gicaro made the utmost effort to enhance the audience’s experience through visual symphonies. Delving into the intricate details, flowing fabrics, and symbolic motifs reminiscent of gods and goddesses, or mythical creatures. The colors to be used and the overall silhouettes to really evoke the essence of characters’ divinity and authenticity.

Additionally, the promotional posters of “Dayaw sa Bilog ng Buwan” stand out as a beacon of cultural pride. Each poster released was a masterpiece in its own right. With its meticulous research, authentic portrayal of culture, and impeccable execution, the production stands shoulder to shoulder with its counterparts in Metro Manila and beyond.

“The amount of research that went into the costumes are also of great measure. Andami talaga rin nilang hinanap na pegs. Yung accuracy ng mga looks and silhouettes ng mga damit and all. Even the color palette and fabrics na ginamit, marami talagang sinubukan and inaral ang team ni Chase,” Direk Drew said.

A theater by the community for the community

Balud Theater Co. serves as a powerful force for unity within the community, bringing together residents from all walks of life in a shared experience of storytelling and expression. By providing a platform for local talent to shine, the group fosters a sense of ownership and belonging among their hometown. A testament to the power of theater to bridge gaps, unite communities, and celebrate its own identity.

“Since we’re a startup group, and theater is quite young in our town, wala talaga kaming casted na bigatin na actors. There are some na matatawag nating veterans who have stage experiences but majority are students talaga. May ilang working na. Samu’t sari sya talaga. And I think that’s the most beautiful part of this cast, no? That it’s a testament to how theater can bring together people from different walks of life to share an art form,” Direk Drew said.

Direk Drew said that anyone who loves folklore, legends, and mythology would take an interest in the play regardless of their age and status, including those who admire local music and want to witness some spectacle for their summer vacation.
